Background of the Study
Smoking remains a leading cause of respiratory morbidity worldwide, and its impact on the health of young adults is particularly concerning. In Kano State, recent trends indicate an increasing prevalence of smoking among youth, driven by factors such as peer influence, stress, and the proliferation of tobacco advertising. The inhalation of tobacco smoke exposes the respiratory system to a complex mix of toxic chemicals, which can lead to chronic respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, asthma exacerbation, and even early signs of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (Adebayo, 2023; Musa & Ibrahim, 2024). Young adults, being at a critical stage of lung development and overall health establishment, are at risk of long-term damage. Moreover, the combination of smoking with environmental pollutants common in urban Kano may further compound these health risks. Public health interventions aimed at reducing smoking prevalence have been implemented, yet challenges remain due to social acceptance of smoking, inadequate regulation, and low awareness of its long-term effects. This study seeks to investigate the impact of smoking on respiratory health in this demographic by integrating epidemiological data, clinical assessments, and self-reported health behaviors. The outcomes of the study will provide a basis for more effective tobacco control policies and targeted health education programs to reduce respiratory morbidity among young adults in Kano State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite various tobacco control measures, smoking among young adults in Kano State remains high and appears to be linked with deteriorating respiratory health. Clinical observations and preliminary surveys indicate increased incidents of respiratory symptoms, such as chronic cough and reduced lung capacity, among young smokers compared to non-smokers. However, there is limited empirical research in the region that comprehensively explores the association between smoking habits and specific respiratory outcomes. The lack of detailed local data hinders the development of targeted interventions to mitigate these health risks. Moreover, socio-cultural factors and peer influences that promote smoking further complicate efforts to curb tobacco use. This study aims to fill these gaps by systematically investigating how smoking influences respiratory health among young adults, with a focus on quantifying its impact and identifying potential moderating factors.
Objectives of the Study
1. To determine the prevalence of smoking among young adults in Kano State and its association with respiratory symptoms.
2. To examine the specific respiratory health outcomes linked to smoking behaviors in this population.
3. To propose targeted public health interventions to reduce smoking-related respiratory risks.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of smoking among young adults in Kano State?
2. How does smoking affect respiratory health parameters such as lung capacity and symptom frequency?
3. What interventions can effectively reduce smoking rates and improve respiratory outcomes among young adults?
Research Hypotheses
1. Young adults who smoke have a significantly higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms than non-smokers.
2. Smoking intensity is positively correlated with the severity of respiratory health impairments.
3. Public health interventions focused on smoking cessation will significantly reduce respiratory symptoms in this group.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will target young adults aged 18–35 in urban areas of Kano State. Data will be collected through surveys, clinical assessments, and focus group discussions. Limitations include potential self-reporting bias and challenges in controlling for confounding environmental factors.
